Impact on Breastfeeding during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Breastfeeding and COVID-19

Mothers can successfully breastfeed during the pandemic

It is recommended to start and maintain breastfeeding during the COVID-19 outbreak. Here is some information and precautions concerning your baby’s health surrounding breastfeeding.

Breastmilk protects babies from many infections

Several studies show antibodies found in human milk target many viruses. These antibodies can provide protection to the breastfed infant. While there are very few studies regarding COVID-19 in breastmilk, studies of similar viruses (SARS and influenza) did not find the virus in breastmilk. Babies that are breastfed generally have less severe respiratory symptoms if they are sick.

Reducing exposure to COVID-19

All health organizations recommend mothers thoroughly washing their hands with soap and water before feeding or pumping. Wear a mask while breastfeeding or pumping if you are not feeling well. Practice physical and social distancing whenever possible.

Breastfeeding is recommended by (World Health Organization; Centers for Disease Control, and American Academy of Pediatrics) and should continue during COVID-19, as it helps the baby’s immune system fight all types of infection.
