February 2025 LEAF Award Recipient

Vanessa Villarrea-Leaf Award

Vanessa Villarreal, Emergency Department
LEAF Award – February 2025

Vanessa joined San Antonio just six months ago as a tech in our Emergency Department. She is dedicated and compassionate, and her long-term goal is to enter a nursing program and specialize in neonatal care. In her short time with us, Vanessa has already demonstrated that she is quick to go the extra mile without being asked. She was recently transporting a pregnant patient who had come to the ED complaining of chest pain. During the transport for an EKG, Vanessa noticed the patient’s heart rate was low. As soon as the EKG was completed, Vanessa took the patient’s blood pressure, which was significantly elevated. The patient also stated that she had developed a headache. Vanessa immediately notified the charge nurses, which allowed the patient to be assessed quickly to ensure she received timely care. As an ED tech, Vanessa went above and beyond what is expected of her. She stepped up and acted on her gut instinct with quick thinking and knowledge. Congratulations, Vanessa!
