Hi. I'm Carlie Sholz, and I'm one of the lactation consultants at San Antonio Regional Hospital. In honor of Baby Safety Month, I would like to share a few important reminders to help keep your baby safe and healthy. For newborns, well-baby visits and early intervention are crucial for monitoring your baby’s health. A visit to Healthy Beginnings within a few days of discharge will help ensure that your baby’s weight, diaper counts, and jaundice levels are within normal limits. It’s also important to schedule follow-up appointments with your pediatrician within the recommended time frames after leaving the hospital. Safe sleep is another important topic for babies. Be sure to place your baby on their back to sleep. Remember, a firm, flat surface is the safest place for your baby. Remove blankets, toys, pillows, and bumpers from the crib to help reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). It’s also recommended to keep your baby’s sleep area, such as the crib or bassinet, in the same room where you sleep, ideally for the first 6 months of life.

One of the resources that Healthy Beginnings offers related to baby safety is the Friends and Family CPR course. This class is intended for caregivers who want to learn life-saving skills such as infant CPR and choking management but do not need the CPR course completion card for their job or other requirements. Look for this class, as well as other offerings, at SARH.org.
