3D Mammography Helps Save Lives

San Antonio Regional Hospital Offering $49.95 3D Screening Mammograms

A screening mammogram remains one of the best ways to detect breast cancer in its early stages, and 3D mammography plays a vital role in this process.  This advanced breast screening technique provides clearer, more detailed images of breast tissue, revolutionizing mammogram screening. But what exactly is 3D mammography? Who should consider it? And what can you expect during a 3D mammo?

The Importance of Early Detection

Detecting breast cancer early significantly enhances the chances of successful treatment. By identifying cancer of the breast in its initial stages, healthcare providers can implement effective treatment plans, improving patient outcomes. In fact, statistics from the American Cancer Society reveal that early detection boosts the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer (before it spreads) to 99%. Regular mammograms are the most effective method for early detection, and 3D mammography has further improved the accuracy of these screenings.

3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, provides a three-dimensional view of breast tissue, allowing radiologists to examine breast tissue in greater detail.

How Does 3D Mammography Improve Accuracy?

3D mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced imaging technique used to detect breast cancer. Unlike traditional mammography, which captures two-dimensional images, breast tomosynthesis creates a three-dimensional image by taking multiple X-ray images from different angles.

This technology allows radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer, providing a more detailed and accurate view of any abnormalities. The multiple images are reconstructed into a 3D image, which can be manipulated by the radiologist to enhance visibility and aid in detecting subtle changes or small tumors.

Compared to traditional mammography, 3D mammography offers several advantages. It reduces the chance of false positives, which can cause unnecessary anxiety and additional testing. Viewing breast tissue in three dimensions enables radiologists to differentiate between benign abnormalities and potential cancerous lesions more effectively.

Who Should Consider 3D Mammography?

3D mammography offers numerous benefits for breast cancer screening. While every woman can benefit from this technology, certain groups should especially consider it.

Age and risk factors for cancer of the breast are crucial in determining the suitability of 3D mammography. As women age, their risk of developing a lump in breast increases. Women over 40 should strongly consider regular 3D mammography screenings. Additionally, women with a family history of breast cancer or those carrying specific genetic mutations associated with an increased risk should opt for 3D mammography.

Women with dense breast tissue also greatly benefit from 3D mammography. Dense breast tissue can make it challenging to detect abnormalities on traditional 2D mammograms. However, breast tomosynthesis provides a more detailed and accurate view, allowing for earlier detection of potential abnormalities in women with dense breasts.

What to Expect During a 3D Mammogram

During a 3D mammogram, you are positioned exactly the same as a 2D mammogram.  In fact, you may not notice a difference at all.  You will be asked to hold your breath twice for each exposure.  First, the tube head rotates and moves in an arc across your breast, this is the 3D portion.  The tube then comes back to center and takes the traditional 2D image.  Each image takes approximately 7 seconds.
